PART 1 The Parameters of a Score

Why Use A Composer At All?

Just as an actor can bring aspects to the story that the writer never  imagined, so can a film composer.  As any experienced director knows, a scene can take on new subtle emotions when performed by talented actors, characteristics a director might have never envisioned.

Yes this is a surprise to the director but it’s a pleasant one.  Actors bring a new life, a new dimension, a new welcomed depth to a story, and the film takes on a deeper meaning and becomes a richer experience.

A talented composer, song writer, musician can bring out aspects of a film the film makers hadn’t thought of. Creative, inventive music adds surprises to a film, making it more intriguing in it's dramatic effect.

HOW MUCH MUSIC

Film music is composed and recorded in sections called cues. The very first decision to be made by all involved is just how much music should be in a film, the amount of cues.  As with a VU meter, the electronic instrument that measures the scale of audio volume, film makers can choose from a wide range of music to be used in the score. Will the music be used   in  a minimalistic approach or in         "wall-to-wall" amounts?

MINIMALISM: the music  played only     where it absolutely is needed, where it cannot be avoided.

WALL-TO-WALL

Music as used in action films where the music hardly ever stops, in fear the action will slow down. It’s used in many other types of projects to give energy or a sense of style. Many types of shows fear boring their audience. Music and also sound effects are used to drive the excitement factor.

Deciding on the amount of music, say on a scale of 1 to 10, is a creative decision where the film maker and the composer must come to an agreement. Some directors feel their film needs lots of music, others feel the less music the better. It’s all a matter of taste. And when it comes to taste there is no discussion.

If you’re the type of film maker that is leery or insecure about the amount and style of music, probably the less music you use the happier you will be.  This is a generalization of course. I really suggest that you at least once experience the surprise that a film composer can deliver with a great score.  As I have heard many times after scoring a film from directors and producers, “It’s not what I expected, but I love it.”

If a film maker backs away from using original music he or she might be missing a good chance to enhance the film.  By allowing a composer to overlay his dramatic interpretations with his music a filmmaker could be enriching the expressive dynamics more than imagined.  Obviously the secret is choosing a composer / songwriter / musician with great taste. Preferably choose a person with understanding of drama, story, and the ability to turn music into emotional terms, and tailor it perfectly to your film.
